This brief article aims to provide an overview of the role of nutritional supplementation for age-related macular disease, and covers the background theory, randomised controlled trials, and safety. The proposed importance of lutein is explained, and guidance given for optometrists who wish to discusses nutritional supplementation and dietary modification with their patients.

Dr Hannah Bartlett is a lecturer on the Optometry programme at Aston University. Her main research interest is nutrition and ocular disease. She has published in international journals and spoken and national and international conferences. She regularly provides CET articles and training for UK optometrists.

Successful completion of the multiple choice test is worth 1 CET point. This CET is approved for optometrists and dispensing opticians.
